Devices certainly have more secure firmware than 5 years ago, but the hacks are still coming.  Are we close to having truly secure devices, or is this just a never ending battle?

Related, with all the added resources going in to cyber in the last few years, how much is this affected the cost of the devices themselves?

Things of value will always have to be protected.

Because if they aren't, then someone will eventually come along and steal these things.

This is the fundamental building block of our industry.

Why would protecting things of value available via IoT devices be any different?

I feel there will always be a war between the light and dark (Star Wars reference  above prompted this).  In the 80s computer hacking was mostly minor, perhaps mangling someone’s computer with a boot sector virus or putting in some snarky splash screen.  Now there are profit motives: being able to sell botnet cycles, crypto currency mining, holding locked databases hostage, personal data/financial info, etc.  More recently hacking has even entered politics and warfare.  While there were limited motives in the 80s - mostly just emulating Wargames and bragging rights - there is more potential reward now.

Where we used to worry about one network being conpromised (ours) with the cloud and IoT we have to worry about a much larger “network”. Where there is a financial reward there will be someone to claim it.

As with all wars it will continue to escalate without end until the cost becomes too great for one side or the other to bear.
