Access Control: Do You Use Request-To-Enter/Ren?

We are testing Ubiquiti's Access System and it has an input I've not commonly seen and never seen used: REN or Request-to-Enter:

This is just a dry contact that unlocks a door.

I have no real sense of when to use this. Maybe for a front desk 'buzz-in' application? But the system does not log whom executed it, and essentially no access 'control' is maintained.

Do you use REN? Does your preferred system have a dedicated input for it?
