Milestone Announces... More Storage?

How is this worthy of an announcement?

Milestone boldly declares:

"Our Milestone partners and customers asked us for more storage with the Milestone Husky Series and we delivered."

Here is what Milestone is launching at ISC West:

  • 2x the storage on the Milestone Husky M10 – up to 2TB (from 1TB)
  • 3x the storage on the Milestone Husky M30 – up to 12TB (from 4TB)
  • 2x the storage on the Milestone Husky M50 – up to 48TB (from 24TB)
  • 2x the storage on the Milestone Husky M30 Hybrid – up to 8TB (from 4TB)
  • 2x the storage on the Milestone Husky M50 Hybrid – up to 32TB (from 16TB)

I sure hope they have a lot bigger news than this.

But why would you even formally announce something so trivial?

Wow. Upgrading from 1 Tb HDDs to 2 or 4Tb. Really cutting edge for 2013...

If they were announcing the use of the 5Tb or 6Tb drives, that would be worthy on an announcement. Or the Helium filled, hermetically sealed 6Tb or 8Tb drives from Hitachi... But alas... Fail....

Disappointing... I hope there are bigger announcements coming on the VMS side.

I think the bigger problem is that Milestone is suffering from selective hearing. At the gathering I attended a few months ago, all in attendance agreed that Husky needed more storage options ie you needed to be able to open them up and add storage if you needed to. Currently you can void warranty if you open a Husky. So their answer to this is to put bigger drives in up front BUT you still can't add/change drives if you want to.

This is what happens when a Software Company wants to become a Hardware Company. There are heaps of examples where Software Companies have successfully made this transition. Let me think now.....there's um um....would Apple count?

"you needed to be able to open them up and add storage if you needed to. Currently you can void warranty if you open a Husky"

Good feedback. I wonder why Milestone does not allow that.

Isn't the ability to 'open them up' key to being an open platform :)

So, I guess that this means that the Husky nits do not have Hot Swappable Drives?

No, it looks like Milestone is going for more of the iPhone approach, pick your model, that's your hardware, no changes, no complexity.

You may be correct. I haven’t looked inside one but the drive bays may need special mounting brackets and cables. They most likely do not have the brackets and cables in each unit for adding drives. That’s why I still buy my servers from a CA company that builds them for me with hot swap drives bays. I got them to load the OS with milestone and let me remotely log-in to configure and load my licenses. They ship the finished units to my job site ready to go.
