Research WDR specs on 3 cameras, each from different manufacturers. Report what the WDR dB rating is and whether they use 'true' or 'fake' WDR.

For more information on WDR techniques, see the class 5 reading: WDR Tutorial and also reference our WDR Manufacturer Cheat Sheet.

Sony SNC-VM630 The camera specifications indicate that the camera has WDR equivalent to 90 dB with View-DR technology. Interesting, there was a study that indicates the Sony performed better with the 90 dB WDR when the camera's enhancement technology was utilized, than the cameras with the 120dB noted below.

Samsung SNV-6084R

The specifications for the Samsung camera say that it has 120 dB of WDR.

Hikvision DS-2CD7254FWD-EIZ

The specifications indicate the camera has 120 dB of WDR.

March Networks MegaPX 5 MP Camera: A WDR of 93 dB is used. Officially this is a true WDR camera but at this value it is considered slightly less than what most manufacturers rate their cameras as when considered as "true" WDR (100 db+). The 93 dB however is probably just a conservative estimate

GeoVision GV-FER5303 Fisheye Camera: At a WDR rating of 72 dB, this is almost definitely not true WDR (and is in fact not rated as having a WDR Pro Sensor like other cameras from GeoVision that have a 100+ db WDR rating).

Uniview IPC2324EBR-DPZ28 Motorized Bullet Camera: The camera specification refers to it having an "Optical WDR" of up to 120 dB, which is most definitely True WDR. On the field tests by IPVM have shown that another Uniview IP camera with similar WDR specs has delivered quite good WDR image quality.

Interesting all the marketing material says True WDR 120db, but yet if you look at the above pdf it also mentions DWDR!

Axis P1224-E

Thought I would throw this one in there. Doesn't mention it so probably does not have it!

Axis M3005-V

Axis state on their webpage WDR. Not until you look at the data sheet that it only states "Wide Dynamic range - dynamic contrast". No mention of any db rating so would have to say that this is a fake WDR.

Sony SNCEB632R

This model of Sonys cctv range states "

  • Extremely Wide Dynamic Range to 90dB achieved with View-DR technology

As referenced in IPVM this term View-DR makes this a true WDR camera.

Arecont- AV3226PMTIR- States it offers True WDR up to 100 DB

Other than not being able to find the DR rating for the P3367 the others i believe to have true WDR.

Hikvision DS-2CD4A25FWD-IZ: the Wide Dynamic Range is 140 dB. This dynamic range, together with the “FWD” in the model number, indicates it is True WDR.

Dahua IPC-HDBW8331E-Z: the specifications on “Backlight Compensation” include the following:

Backlight Compensation (BLC) which is a single exposure of the camera which optimizes exposure in the foreground and background,

Highlight Compensation (HLC) which is a single exposure of the camera to which image processing is used in order to reduce overexposure from strong light sources like headlights or spotlights

Ultra WDR @ 140dB

Although the WDR is very wide, which would let me think of true WDR, the existence of BLC and HLC makes me conclude it is fake WDR, because true WDR would not need the coexistence of BLC and HLC. However, the denomination Ultra WDR

AXIS P1435-E: the datasheet refers to “Wide Dynamic Range-Forensic Capture: Up to 120dB depending on scene”. Although there is no much information, the forensic capture and the 120dB let me conclude it is True WDR.

Arecont AV12186DN: This camera model does have "true" WDR capabilities according to the manufacturer but we know this with it having multiple exposures. It has a WDR of up to 100dB allowing users to see clearly in shaded and bright areas of the scene simultaneously.

Samsung SNV-6084R: The WDR rating on this camera is 120 dB, more than enough to assume this is a "true" WDR camera.

FD-202Ne V6: This camera manufacturer claims to have WDR, but with no decibel value, so we can assume it is not a "true" WDR camera without testing.

Good Day,

The first camera I looked at was the Avigilon H4SL Dome. The data sheet lists a dB rating of 100 and elsewhere states "Dual Exposure Wide Dynamic Range" which indicates "True WDR".

Next up is the PELCO EVO-05NMD 5MP 360° SURVEILLANCE WDR CONCEALED OUTDOOR NETWORK CAMERA. The data sheet has "Enhanced WDR" and further down lists "Electronic WDR with a 60dB rating. Clearly this is not an example of "True WDR"

Lastly, I looked at Arecont AV2556DN. The spec sheet lists WDR up to 100dB. Further examination of their website finds a page explaining WDR and containing this text:

"WDR cameras achieve a good overall exposure of the image by capturing two exposures one short and one long. The two exposures are then combined to produce a single shot with good overall exposure."

This indicates to me that the "WDR" listed for this Arecont camera is reporting "True WDR"

Michael
