Hello everyone! Welcome.

This is the 'class members only' discussion area for the Winter 2016 Camera Course.

All your questions and feedback have a home being posted here. We will have 'assignment discussions' every week that require your participation, so bookmark this forum.

For your first assignment: introduce yourself! Explain who you are, who you work for, and your main motivation for taking the class.

I'll start it off: I am Brian Rhodes (see: my LinkedIn profile page) Feel free to email me anytime at: brian@ipvm.com.

I've been with IPVM a little more than four years. Before then, I was the engineering manager for a security integrator in the South-Central USA. (and a regular IPVM member!) With IPVM's help, I was able to help make their transition from analog CCTV to IP based HD surveillance. It was an exciting time!

I really enjoy interacting with and learning from you, our students. Regardless if you're a camera novice or veteran - you'll enjoy and grow with the class!

Now it's your turn: introduce yourself!

Looking forward to the class and I hope everyone enjoys it and does well.

Hi everyone. I'm Mark Langley and I have been working for an IP Network Integrator for over 12 years. I've had various roles from sales, to pre-sales engineer and some installation (I just finished installing a small Samsung IP system this week). I have a good understanding of IP networks and cabling but have found myself dealing more and more with IP surveillance. Unlike a majority of the other network services, surveillance has a huge component outside of IP that is required to understand. I'm looking to get a better understanding of how cameras work, what's important and a better general knowledge about surveillance all together. I am looking forward to this class.

Hi, I'm David Milroy. Currently I'm working for Eastern Shore Forest Products, with its main office in Salisbury, Maryland. I've been here for 6 years. When I started working here I was managing one of the divisions. It quickly became apparent the IT infrastructure wasn't up to the task. I started upgrading all data systems, POS, built some databases, installed new accounting package, etc. With our multiple, diverse locations it was impossible to keep an eye on what was going on. Once I was able to get a good ISP serving each location I installed IP camera systems so I could see what was going on. This was a hands on, trial and error approach. But I got them working and everyone is pleased with the results. Now I'd like to know the proper way to do it !!

Hello everyone. My name is Don Gordon and I have a system integration and software development company with expertise in digital camera video surveillance systems. I am new to IPVM and wow what a bonanza of relevant and timely information this site has. I am beginning the process of upgrading a customer with 2000 analog cameras to new digital cameras and I have used the IPVM site extensively to evaluate and select suitable cameras for our new installations in the last few months. The number of features and permutations of manufactures and models is overwhelming and its difficult to sort through the marketing hype versus features that will really make a difference. Even in the last few months there have been new camera models and features that must be analyzed and evaluated. It's really difficult to keep up but with IPVM they always seem to be one step ahead of me. I am advanced certified in Milestone XProtect and all of my fielding's have been with this VMS. I look forward to both the Winter 2016 Camera and Network courses. I hope to learn from the wealth of industry experience that all of the students of this class have to offer.
