Hello everyone! Welcome.

This is the 'class members only' discussion area for the Spring 2015 IP Camera Course.

All your questions and feedback have a home being posted here. We will have 'assignment discussions' every week that require your participation, so bookmark this page.

For your first assignment: introduce yourself! Explain who you are, who you work for, and your main motivation for taking the class.

I'll start it off: I am Brian Rhodes (see: my LinkedIn profile page) Feel free to email me anytime at: brian@ipvm.com.

I'll be co-teaching this class with Matt Transue (matt@ipvm.com) and other colleagues from IPVM joining in regularly.

I've been with IPVM a little more than three years. Before then, I was the engineering manager for a security integrator in the South-Central USA. (and a regular IPVM member!) With IPVM's help, I was able to help make their transition from analog CCTV to IP based HD surveillance. It was an exciting time!

I really enjoy interacting with and learning from you, our students. Regardless if you're a camera novice or veteran - you'll enjoy and grow with the class!

Now it's your turn: introduce yourself!

Howdy from Dallas Texas!

My name is David Bock, and No Good Deed Goes Unpunished!

I actually work for a Jewelry company for my day job. I also have a strong computer and security background. I got involved with analog video systems way back in the 80’s, and had to relearn it all a couple of years ago when I was tasked with updating our camera system. I called in a few favors and found a fantastically recommended company and listened to their recommendations. What I didn’t know was that the “Engineers” left all of the hardware specifying to my (new) sales associate. I then had to clean up after him.

Skipping through the boring parts about living with minor issues, a few things happened: I was put in charge of the security committee at my Synagogue, I now receive updates from The Anti-Defamation League, I found out that video best practice standards have changed when one of my friends’ store got robbed, and I started getting a flood of recomendations from places like several police departments, the FBI and of course the department of Homeland security! I need to get current again.

I tasked myself with updating our camera system to the new standards, I am in the process of installing a camera system in our Synagogue, and in my capacity as a consultant, am working on several other camera projects. I joined this course to relearn all I have forgotten, figure out the latest technology and open a new chapter in my consulting business.

As a result, in order to ensure we provide a high level of service to our clients, we need to increase our skill levels in this area. As there does not seem to be much around other then vendor sponsored training, I am hoping the IPVM course provides a knowledge base that will allow us to meet that service objective.

Hello Everyone! I am excited to start my first IPVM course and learning as much as I can. I am an enthusiastic novice living in the midwest USA (Chicago). Please share your own experiences during the course, as I would love to learn more about how cameras are used in real world environments.

I volunteer with several animal non-profit groups...from wildlife education/rehab, dog rescue, animal disaster response to lost dog search work. I quckly understood how important security cams are needed. Recently, after an intruder entered one facility and shot a captive caged coyote - blinding her.... the director asked me if I could help getting security cameras set up. The past year, I began researching and after getting a few donated cameras/used cams purchased, I am now taking a strong liking to this technology. Possibly, if a good opportunity arises along the way, even considering career changing to a security camera or related field. --Nick

My name is Jim McDonald. I have been an IT consultant for almost 20 years, but I am now working for a security integration and monitoring company in Boston, MA.

I was introduced to the security field by a client who upgraded their camera and access control system from analog to IP. The integrators had substantial experience in analog systems but were lacking in their understanding of network configuration. I worked with the integrators to smooth out the IT related issues and saw an opportunity. The install involved 180 cameras in 60 buildings and after the first week I knew I needed to get involved in this industry. So two years ago I teamed up with some of the integrators and started a new company.

Although it is easy for me to do my job by looking at the cameras and other components as computers, I would like to increase my knowledge and understanding of cameras and access control systems.
