Axis Launches NVRs
Rebadged Dells?
According to Axis, it's 'next gen' Dell hardware not available on the general website.
Whatever the Dell model, I don't think it will make a big difference for people deploying a few dozen cameras.
"Like any NVR, the key benefits include simpler setup, less risk of performance issues (compared to underspecifying one's own box) and included hardware support."
This IS Axis afterall, the same people who deployed Axis Camera Companion. ;)
I don't know why most manufacturers (camera ones or even VMS) follow the path of HW because the future is SW. Building a NVR is no added value, nothing that we did not see already. Developing SW is adding value to HW, that's where the industry is moving. In addition, to copy a SW is not that easy as copying a NVR or whatever server.
My 2 cents...
Could it be that selling HW has the following benefits in compare with software:
- no compatibility issues
- no software piracy
- less tech support burden
?
However, it in a similar price range to big name NVRs with comparable feature sets.
But do the big name NVRs that you refer to also feature seamless single manufacturer lock-in? Or is that what differentiates the Axis' offering?
