Configuration Management, What Do You Use?

In the past I have just used Excel spreadsheets with great success. I was out of that part of the industry for several years, but now I have a need to do it again. The biggest change I see is the need to create unique passwords for every device to comply with IT security requirements.

I think keeping those passwords in an Excel document sounds catastrophically stupid, and I had considered using something like LastPass (probably something offline, so not actually LastPass) to both generate and store those passwords for me. Is there a tool in the IT world that already does all the configuration management AND the password stuff that I should be looking at instead?
