His most fascinating point is that (he believes) his cameras are not even available online:
My cameras are not online as well, they are powered through modem yes, but nowhere are they available on a website. Not port forwarded as well
Unfortunately, even if he did not port forward them, Hikvision's UPnP feature / vulnerability would automatically expose his IP cameras to the public Internet without him even knowing. Obviously, his camera was online because Shodan (the source for our map) could not have found it without that.
He also notes the main reason he updated his camera was the IPVM map. He's quite lucky that the worst thing was a single still image and not having the camera hacked, bricked or taken over.
