Assignment #7: Research Your Applicable Codes/Ahjs

For this Assignment, I want you to list the specific Life/Safety Code that applies to your local area.

In the USA, there are multiple free resources like this that list applicable codes and who the 'top AHJ office' is for an area. Like most government entities, that person/office probably is not in the field much, but they are a great 'first contact' to find out who the best AHJ is for a given project.

Example Answer:

I want to you research this for your location and reply with which Fire/Life Safety Codes your area uses. (In my case, it's: IBC 2009, IFC 2009, and NFPA 101)

Where you can, link to the resource where you found the answer, ie: http://www.cmdgroup.com/building-codes/oklahoma/

Links to other databases or individual websites are okay.

If you are in parts of the world where you cannot find this online, simply listing the information you've gathered offline is acceptable, but be ready for me to double check it!

In Saskatchewan we follow:

The National Building Code of Canada

Saskatchewan follows the National Building Code of Canada (NBC) by regulation under provisions of The Uniform Building and Accessibility Standards Act (the UBAS Act) with few amendments. The NBC sets the minimum standard for building and accessibility. The NBC establishes these four core objectives:

  • safety;
  • health;
  • accessibility for persons with disabilities; and
  • fire and structural protection of buildings.

The NBC 2015 that was adopted for use throughout Saskatchewan comes into effect on January 1, 2018.

The National Fire Code of Canada

Saskatchewan follows the National Fire Code of Canada (NFC) by regulation under provisions of The Fire Safety Actas the standard for the fire safe operation of buildings and facilities. The NFC establishes these three core objectives:

  • safety;
  • health; and
  • fire protection of buildings and facilities.

The NFC 2015 that was adopted for use throughout Saskatchewan comes into effect on January 1, 2018.

Relevant codes applicable to Western Australia are:

The Building Code of Australia (BCA) Section D1 Provision for escape. Emergency access and egress.  See:  (http://mgoboard.com.au/wp-content/uploads/2015/07/BCA-Volume-One-2015.pdf)

The BCA code specifically states that personal safety takes precedence over security.

Section D2.21 covers fire doors, exit doors (egress pathways), permitted locks, lock heights

The Building Act 2011 (r.18b) also governs the building approval process and provides for the Fire and Emergency Services (FES) Commissioner with the authority to block the issue of a building permit if it does not meet FES operational requirements, including occupancy permit requirements (see www.commerce.wa.gov.au/sites/default/files/atoms/files/building_approvals_process_guide.pdf)

This was a difficult one for me, but very necessary.
Since I moved to Mexico less then a year ago, I struggled to find this information.

I have found this piece of regulation that is geared towards fire prevention:

Seguridad y prevencion contra incendios

It does cover some part of egress codes but I feel that there should be a lot more to it.
I will be visiting the local authorities to find out more.

I also found this regarding the IBC:
