Amazon announced Amazon Go about a year ago, and their promo looks like a game-changer for retail AND for surveillance. Surprisingly it grabbed not to much attention still. They are still not in time, as they were facing "technical difficulties".
In this article, they are rumoring that finally, things are mostly done. Will it really change the industry, or we will see something less sophisticated / more real?
Based on the little I know about how Go works (I have a tight-lipped neighbor on the development team and Amazon employee friends who shop there), the system relies on so many cameras (which are purpose built, not standard surveillance cameras) that this would be infeasible for anything but small stores. But the technology is impressive and probably has applications beyond what I can imagine.
