If your ADT DVR or NVR or video surveillance recorder has recently been hacked, here is what we recommend.

Symptoms: The most visible typical symptom is that the camera names will be changed to Hacked 1, Hacked 2, etc. like so:

These recorders are from Dahua, relabeled / resold by ADT.

Firmware Fix

A new firmware should fix this or at least remove the underlying vulnerability. We recommend contacting ADT, though ADT may not have the firmware yet. You might try contacting Dahua but we doubt that Dahua will directly solve this, rather they will likely turn you to their OEM partner, ADT.

If your ADT DVR is hacked, you are not alone. There is a sweeping hack attack against Dahua manufactured devices ongoing (e.g., How I Handled A Hacked Dahua NVR).

ADT From Dahua / Issues

Dahua has a poor track record in cyber security and in reasonably and quickly responding to cybersecurity problems (e.g., earlier this year a Dahua backdoor was uncovered).
