Class 10 Assignment: Grade Your Password

Time for a stomach check: Are you using weak passwords?

Use this site, and report out on the score your IPVM password gives you.  Here is mine:

Based on those results, give two areas you need to improve to make your password tougher.

For example, I should decrease using 'Sequential Numbers' (My password has two numerals sequential to each other) that are easier to guess, and I should use more 'Middle Symbols' (special characters taken from the middle of a QWERTY keyboard) that are less common.

No Information Is Kept

This application uses JavaScript that does not store any passwords or sends them anywhere and uses your local browser only. The page's source code is posted on GitHub for public use/scrutiny and is simply an educational tool.

However, if you are not comfortable punching in your IPVM password into this site; do not do it.  Instead, use something you think might be a useful password.  Report out on that result here instead.

Need To Change IPVM Passwords?

If you'd like to request a change to your IPVM password based on the results here, use this link to change your password.

At no point do I or any other IPVM admin have visibility/knowledge of your password, so keep it confidential!

I'm pretty confident with this password.  I could add more characters to increase the strength, but, I think I'm ok with these results.

This is one of the perks of using a password management app that generates strong unique passwords and stores them in an encrypted vault.

Unfortunately, my password is considered weak.  I need to fix my password so that the numbers are not sequential.  In addition, I didn't realize this, but apparently some of the characters are vulnerably too close together on the keyboard.  Good to know.

Seems like the password I have is weak.

Need to increase character count to 12 or more.

Middle Symbols and number should be included to further strengthen it.

According to the legend, my password met a good chunk of the criteria but still has much room for improvement. One would be character count, where adding an additional 2 characters would greatly improve my score. Another would be to use numbers in the middle of my password, which in sure quite the common issue for most user passwords.

  1. It appears that my password needs four additional characters to meet the minimum character count of twelve.
  2. The count of middle numbers is also too low. At least one number should be placed between part of the text. Great to see this sort of feedback especially when generating new passwords.
