Autonomy [link no longer available] offers a classic case of failure in the video analytics segment. Over the last 5 years, they have pitched and pushed their solutions into the video surveillance market [link no longer available]. The pitch was always unclear and based on them providing a list of everything - Automony claimed to provide perimeter violation, facial recognition, LPR, PoS integration, video recording, search, real time alerting, etc.

While there's no doubt, Autonomy is a global leader in the broader search market, their approach never translated to meaningful success in the video surveillance market.

In light of this, Autonomy has announced a partnership with Vidient. We think this makes sense as Vidient can provide them a sold solution for video analytics used in the security/surveillance market. Autonomy can then manage and integrate Vidient's analysis into their overall management system which is broadly used and praised in IT organizations.

In the last 2 years, Vidient has been quiet on the marketing/promotion side. In our June 2009 company update on Vidient, we noted how they were focused on reducing false alerts and optimizing performance on server side deployments.
