How Embarrassing - 28 Security 'MVPs'

Published Jun 03, 2015 04:00 AM

Security industry awards are nonsense. This is not news.

From pay to promote Frost awards to trade show fluff awards to trade mag awards, media companies want money and manufacturers need someone to love them.

I'd love for any of these to give a brief description on *why* a particular component was choosen, who the competitors/alternatives were and so on.

Until one of these entities is willing to back up their awards with something other than a glorfied softball team trophy they're really valueless.

And also please honestly explain why there is an entry fee. Don't tell me your "judges" spent more than 5 minutes with any given product. Shouldn't they generally be evaluating and testing and exploring the products they write about anyway?

Oh, so you have never read a trade magazine...

I did, once. In my defense someone switched the cover with one from The Onion and it took me a few pages before I realized they weren't just having an off-month creativity-wise for that issue.

... A glorified softball team trophy.

Hardly. These SAMMYs are made from Solid Lexan®, known to be pound for pound as heavy as Gold.

That remark does a disservice to honest, hardworking softball players everywhere.

I try to offend at least one group daily in my online posts. I've been working down the list for a while and softball players were up next.

Sounds like a pretty good racket. I think I'll start my own magazine and only charge $250 an award.

Maybe instead of calling them SAMMYs, call them SLAMMYs, because of the discount.

Point of information, 'Sammys' are free to enter, unlike the MVPs. Presumably integrators have less willingness to pay for awards than manufacturers.

This is clearly a trolling post.

Without all the gamesmanship our business becomes very boring and geeky. In typical fashion, I'm driving us right off the road here. Following is a list of awards won by someone whom I wouldn't accept advice on whether it's daylight or dark. I think you can figure out who it is rather quickly. Awards are just part of the play. They have always had the taint of influence whether they are legit or not.

The MVPs are back for 2016. And for the next few weeks, you can save $100 buying your shot/spot!

Well, IPVM is a product and there would be no competition. Should we crowd fund?

The trophy would look good on Ethan's desk.

The 2017 version is here:

The SSI MVP Awards will be bestowed during a special trophy ceremony at ISC West 2017. Too numerous to list here, awards will be given in subcategories from the following product types: Access Control, Business Operations, Central Station/Monitoring, Fire/Life Safety, Home Controls, Installation Aids, Intrusion Detection, Misc. Security Products, Security Apps and Video Surveillance.

Awards 'too numerous to list' are, by definition less prestigious than the contrary.
