Axis Camera Down-Tilt Auto-Measurement

Published Jan 06, 2015 05:00 AM

Tilting a camera too much can create problems.

Most commonly, it undermines getting clear shots of faces and license plates.

However, mounting angles are typically left up to guesswork, or trying to physically measure with plumb lines and protractors. Now, in their high end gyroscope-equipped models, Axis has added real-time tilt display to their cameras, allowing users to quickly measure and adjust their mounting angles.

In this note, we show how to use this feature and demonstrate its use on a camera in a video screencast.

I am also confused. Samsung and Panasonic cameras that I have worked with for years have a tilt angle display as part of the OSD. This doesn't seem like anything new.

See screenshot below with OSD showing a 6-degree tilt angle.

Is that screen for a mechanical PTZ? In that case the camera should know the current orientation, since it controls the gimbal directly.

The Q1615 is a box camera, and is not in control of its own orientation, and therefore uses gyros. Are there some non-PTZ cameras from Samsung or Panasonic that have the OSD tilt values?

Aaron, in this post, we are talking about fixed / non-PTZ cameras. The rationale is that with a PTZ, by design, one can always change the tilt but with a fixed camera, whatever tilt you set it at is the tilt you have.

Thanks. That makes more sense...
