Axis Corner Mount Camera Q8414-LVE Examined

Published Nov 18, 2014 05:00 AM

Few options exist for corner mount cameras.

Despite this, they are a popular choice for jails, elevators and other confined areas.

Axis has now announced its own HD corner mount cameras.

In this note, we examine the key claimed differentiators, pricing and competitive comparison against Bosch, Mobotix and Vicon options.

Looks promising. I can think of several places to use a corner camera.

oh undisclosed B! :)

I am curious though how widely used these cameras will be in elevators or is this overkill / overpriced for a regular elevator car?

Running cables to these might be a bit challenging. As a former carpenter I know that corners should have wood or steel studs in the corners of the walls and at the edge of ceilings to support the sheetrock. There are also a lot of corners that aren't exactly 90 degrees. Nothing that can't be worked around, but mounting them might be more difficult than usual.

Axis claimed at ACCC that the camera was "ligature proof" so that a prisoner couldn't hang themselves from it, and there were no sharp edges for them to hurt themselves on.

Good feedback, C. I wonder if they are going to publicly promote that. I didn't see such claims in their announcement, likely because of the legal risk of such a guarantee.

They mention it in their press release.

They say, "keeping in mind that a surveillance camera should lack ligature points and present an anti-grip design."

That's materially different from saying it is 'ligature proof' and that a 'prisoner couldn't hang themselves.'

Legalese. Gotta love it. Let's split the difference and call it "ligature resistant".

Maybe have Derek test this feature? :)

We use a significant number of this type of camera in observation cells - typically Bosch and Vicon to date. The one requirement we have in Canada is that the camera integrate a controllable LED to indicate that the video feed is being displayed on a monitor. This follows from Canada's privacy rules. Even if the camera is not being watched live, we do record them 24/7 (empty cell or not).

Mark, interesting feedback. Privacy rules extend to prisoners as well in Canada, hmm? I don't think that is the case in the US.

Must the LED be lit only when live video is displayed, or when it is recorded also?

I remember one instance in which a police station asked us to put LEDs visible to the detainee outside the cell, which indicated whether it was being recorded. When they asked to use the bathroom they called a guard who would turn recording off and stood by so you weren't capturing video of them on the toilet.

I didn't say it made sense! I just said they asked for it. Actually I believe multiple departments did.

The LED is lit when the video is being displayed - this would be viewed in the responsible control post - the recording occurs 24/7. Occassionally they may use the cell for someone not under observation or the cell may not be in use and in that case they should not be viewing the feed.

In Canada, a prisoner only loses freedom of association and freedom of movement. They can even vote.

There is a reason it costs ~$100,000 per year for a medium security inmate in Canada versus ~$20,000 in Georgia and the difference is not all heating costs!
