Startup: The Smartest House Light Ever?

Published Oct 24, 2014 04:00 AM

$100,000+, 2 days.

A startup has a hot home security camera that doesn't look like one. In fact, it looks like a light fixture. Because, well, it does that too.

However, this camera/light combo also sends alerts when prowlers are detected, and the company claims the average DIYer can install it in a few minutes for less than $200 total.

In this note, we examine Kuna, spot where the hype may be too strong, and see what members think.

So far, the answer to the poll is overwhelmingly "no."

While this is somewhat expected from manufacturers/integrators (because Kuna is not their product, and it is DIY installed), even end-users are voting 'no'.

That is surprising to me. I think Kuna will be fairly successful selling pre-orders. 2 1/2 days in, they've already sold $125k, and they have more than 35 days before it closes. At this rate, this thing could close on the half-million mark by the end of the month.

I wouldnt be interested in this product for professional purposes, but at my or my parents house this would be a fun toy.

I'm wondering about the telltale blue LED. Can you turn it off or not. Also, it seems odd that they seem to simultaneously market this as a hidden-camera and a very obvious door video intercom unit.

If I were an end-user and all I knew about surveillance was what I saw in videos like this, I would order one of these. It looks easy to use and easy to setup, push notifications combine with the concept of speaking to someone who’s trying to break-in is appealing.

I agree with Jon, the LED needs to go and the camera is a little too obvious, I dont think an end-user would care.

I bought a similar door entry camera / intercom in a pre-release crowd funded startup and never again will I be the guinea pig. Huge waste of money. If there around in 2-3 years of successful deployments, maybe. But my experience is none existent support for a market untested product. Support is to say the least I couldn't even return it for lack of no one answering emails, phone calls, voicemails or Facebook messages. Its like they test with 2 phones 1 very standard iPhone and 1 type of android. Nothing else. No software variations, screen differences, browser types etc.

What else is out there that give you a video intercom with a smart phone? It seems like an obvious application but I haven't found much out there other than something made by Siedle and it was $$$$$.

Hello Michael: See Shark Tank Featured Startup: Doorbot for a $200 video intercom. Buyer Beware, however...

Doorbot rebranded as Ring recently, but the core features are the same.

Oh man, sorry to hear you got burned, Joe!

I do not think I have read one positive end-user review for Doorbot... brutal.

I like the idea if it was a "professional" device. In other words built to better specs. I can't make money on it because it is a DIY device. That's fine. I design ans sell "professional" systems. I'd love to be able to refer some of my clients to it. Plus, I with a Low Voltage license I would not be able to put it in! Ahhh, value added. I'd like to see storage (SD) card, on it and more importaintly, is there a monthly fee?

Keep some of the limitations and they will come to me when they are ready to pay for the value of my services.
