Wireless Access Control Panels

Published Oct 16, 2014 04:00 AM

One company claims they can connect access control panels wirelessly with ranges up to a mile, saving big bucks and thousands of feet of cable tying together door controllers with the main panel.

In this note, we examine Prodata Key, looking at their wireless implementation, its restrictions, its encryption, credential support, video integration, product pricing and competitive positioning versus traditional access control offerings.

New marketing video from them, just scanned it briefly:

While the video is entertaining, the numbers are confusing.

Prodatakey is saying they are cheaper than 'the other guys', but the metric they use to price out the cost of pulling parts out of a truck and the time it takes to run hard cable between panels is debatable.

For example, are they saying that a spool of cable is $350? You can buy a 1000' spool of Cat5e for like $55.

While I understand the wireless benefits of no cable, the video ignores the big amount of cabling required anyway to wire in devices like locks, readers, and RTE. All the money projected as 'prevented' in carrying materials or using conduit benders to spool out wire is needed with either system, maybe just not as much.

Like we mentioned in the original post, PDK costs more than a typical wired system ($900 panel + $450 controller = $1350 for a one door system) vs. something like $400 - $500 for an Axis A1001 or HID Edge EVO system.

Any labor savings from wireless needs to overcome the ~$1000 price difference right out of the gate. This doesn't even address the other deficiencies like limited integrations and 125 kHz-only credential support.

PDK may make sense for remote installs or where trenching cable is too costly, but this video does not really illustrate that point at all.

apparently another tech follows behind the pdk tech and finishes everything he didn't do before he ran off to go ride his mountain bike...
