Vicon CEO Losing Strategy

Published Sep 30, 2014 04:00 AM

They got the Milestone exec to be their CEO, but his strategy is shaping up to be no better than the failing ones of the previous Vicon / IQinVision regimes.

In this note, we examine the strategy and its weaknesses.

I whish them good luck if they want to develop an open platform VMS like Genetec and Milestone...they will waste years and money to do so where others will improve their SW at the same time. Is there any sense to "reinvent" the wheel ? They should go OEM...it will be easier, faster and cheaper.

I think they should be doing both. A massive problem with Vicon is that they don't integrate with anything or anyone. They desperately need to open up. Avigilon had to do this also because in the beginning they got hammered as a "Proprietary" company and went to great lengths to combat this messaging.

Vicon needs to do the same. I don't think opening up their platform has anything to do with them continuing to package sell their platform. They can certainly continue to do so, and should- just like Avigilon does. But not jumping on the "open platform" messaging will ultimately kill them IMO.

I feel that both companies could develop a solid product line together but its a little late in the game to develop an open camera product line and vms.

my vote is for onvif camera product line, quicker road to positive cashflow. vicon has a great vandal proof corner mounted camera i for one would love to see an onvif version.

I smell the perfume here. This strategy is based on something the rest of us don't know or it might be a startegy that allows someone to spin off pieces and parts.

What specific pieces or parts do you see them selling off?

Whether it will work or not I don't know, I have a feeling it will be tough going.

Being open is the way forward though. All the people I talk to ask about openness and camera support on VMSes and new products. In years to come I imagine most platforms to be open. Business is slowing down and those that innovate and change will remain.

The amount of products on Distributor and Integrator portfolios would suggest they support this as well. It's less risky to sell an open VMS with camera A than VMS Z with Camera Z. If camera A is deemed below requirement it's much easier to swap it as disti or integrator for camera B on an open VMS, thus retaining business with the end-user rather than sacrificing it to a competitor.

For the record, I have a big issue with distribution houses having too many brands in their portfolio. It becomes tedious to support, increasing overheads or lowering support quality while it also confuses the sales team and the customer because it often results in multiple quotes for the same project and the customer barely has a clue to the differences.

People 'always' want openness, in general.

But 'true' open platforms generally perform poorer financially than end to end solutions that have open components.

I disagree.

I think *engineers* want openness.

*People* really just want shit that works for a good price.

Lol, I agree that engineers *really* want openness. I think everyone would abstractly say 'sure i want openness' but to your point what they really want is stuff that works for a good price.
