Brian,

Informative report! But what about spoofing the reader? I believe you owe us a test using your FrankenFinger!

Do you plan to do a shootout with other manufacturers?

Hello Rob:

We have a few more fingerprint readers to do individual reviews about, but at the end of the series we will publish a 'shootout' where we set them all up side by side and try to spoof/exploit them during the same session.

I expect 'frankenfinger 2.0' will debut during that test. ...I've made improvements. :)

For this upcoming shootout it will be also interesting to see results in case of real life situations like dirty fingers, dirty sensor, cuts, overpressing, frozen fingers etc. Moreover 3 enrollees is a very small number and in fact it can be treated almost as a verification mode. In case it is difficult to increase the size of dataset it will be good to see results of non-enrolled persons scans.

Are you going to cut somebody's finger to check the liveness detection? :)

Frozen fingers???

I don't think our insurance covers that :)

In Canada it is covered :)

For the shootout, the plan calls for a larger sample size of fingers. However, even with only 3 people, that is 30 potential fingers/unique prints.

As far as 'sub-prime' prints, we'll use several methods of surface soiling (oils, solvents, dirt) to see if reads are impacted. I haven't really worked up enough courage to cut myself yet, but if anyone wants to donate a finger, be sure to email me! :)

Brian,

I am concerned about the narrow sample of fingers that will only have 3 generic variances.

A couple of thoughts: If John won’t let you buy beer for a block party… eh enrollment session, perhaps involving a local college or even a high school to participate in a biometric identification study?

Personally I think the beer will allow an expanded testing of ease of use, and impairment operational issues. Unfortunately you will need a designated enroller!

We thought about setting a few tables up at a nearby 'community center' that hosts a city library, gym/rec facilities, and has meeting spaces for all sorts of groups. There's probably 2000 - 3000 visitors to that facility on a typical day.

I'm not sure beer would be too popular among the blue-haired ladies attending their monthly knitting meeting, or the school kids going to the library, but we will find some incentive that works!

Thanks for brainstorming this! Your thoughts are appreciated.

Free beer used as an enticement to test access control equipment, where have I heard of that before??

You will attract twice as many people with beer than without, and double that with your high school suggestion (check local laws), though be prepared for a substantial number of re-enrollees.
