Further evidence of large Chinese companies drive to develop their own branded business and compete head to head against large Western companies from ASMAG's China Security CEO Summit.

Specifically, HikVision, one of the largest Chinese manufacturers, discussed how they were inspired by Martin Luther King Jr.'s "I Have a Dream" speech to become more than an OEM. Setting aside the obvious cultural insensitivities of comparing one's business goals to the civil rights movement, their point demonstrates the depth of their commitment.

The most interesting point HikVision made was that the recession was helping them to get their foot in the door. Specifically, they commented "In the past, when the recession did not impact the industry so severely, no matter how much we presented ourselves, the effect was limited. Now, after this year's promotion at IFSEC, people are starting to pay attention to Hikvision."

Perfectably reasonable in an era where cutting costs is key.

[Update: Hikvision has now become one of, if not the largest branded video surveillance provider in the Western world.]
