Selecting Camera Models Added to IPVM Calculator

Published Sep 22, 2014 04:00 AM

Now, you can select your own camera models in the IPVM camera calculator.

IPVM members can see and compare what their preferred cameras will capture and deliver.

Choose from 1500 1700 [Update 2016: 3000] cameras. IPVM knows their FoV and resolution, automatically applying it to the calculation.

Check it out in this 1 minute video:

Benefits

Most cameras deployed have integrated lenses with restricted FoVs and most users have specific camera models in mind when planning new deployments.

Picking the actual model allows you to see how well that camera will work.

Is the FoV too narrow for the scene? The calculator shows this to you immediately. You can even compare your camera to your own scene you upload

Is the FoV so wide that the pixel density / quality will be poor? The calculator calculates the PPF / PPM given the camera's specific max resolution and FoV, revealing potential problems immediately.

Manufacturers Already Supported

We are adding more every day. Here are the manufacturers we have already:

  • ACTi
  • Arecont
  • Avigilon
  • Axis
  • Bosch
  • Dahua
  • Hikvision
  • Panasonic
  • Pelco
  • Samsung
  • Sony
  • Vivotek

Update: FLIR and Geovision were added.

Adding Your Preferred Manufacturer

It's simple and free. All we need is a list of (1) model name, (2) maximum resolution and (3) the camera's Angle of View (AoV).

We have a batch upload functionality that takes the list and automatically adds it to the calculator.

If you want to submit, here is the spreadsheet with instructions. When done, or if you need help, email us at submit@ipvm.com

More Coming - Mobile App and Saving Projects

Under the hood, we have redesigned the calculator to make it easier for expansion.

Two big ones are coming up this fall:

  • Saving / Projects: Soon, you will be able to save your calculations and group collections of calculations into projects that can be snapshot, printed out or exported. This will allow you to share them easily.
  • Mobile Apps: By the end of the year, we will launch mobile app versions that improve using the calculator on the go and in the field.

Excellant.

Is there a way to add a button that will spit out some verbiage about the camera's capabilities? Like "$ field of view and $ PPF at a distance of $". Could be helpful to copy and paste into quotes.

Ari, do you mean, for example:

"The Samsung SNV-5010 is 1.3MP, has a 91° FoV and delivers 6.4 PPF at 200' wide scene, 100 feet from the camera."

Exactly. So I can punch my numbers into the calculator, and then paste the exact expected performance into my proposal or quote.

We'll do that. I am going to queue that up with the projects / saving release (mentioned at the end of the announcement above).

We need to handle 3 scenarios - (2) fixed lens, like above, (3) integrated varifocal lens, when a specific AoV is picked and (4) cameras that allow one to pick any lens length.

This is an awesome tool! That being said - Would it be possible to list the mm equivalent of the lens angle in parentheses after the listed angle of view? For example, the Panasonic SW559 has a 2.8 to 10 mm vari focal lens. Could it be listed as AoV 24 (10 mm) - 86 (2.8 mm)? Also, does this tool support wildcard searches (% or *)?

Thanks for the feedback.

We are strongly considering listing the lens length next to the AoV. We see the value, especially in ordering, of cross referencing the lens length in mm to the AoV. If we do it, which we likely will, it be will a month or two, as we need to collect this, etc.

What use case are you trying to use with the wildcard searches? We could do it but I am trying to see how it would be used.

Adding the lens length will be great.

The wildcard could be helpful when you know the company and some of the characters in the camera model but not all of them. An example would be for Panasonic, they use WV-SW, WV-SP and WV-SF as leading characters in the model name. If you are searching for a 559 model camera, you may forget that you must add WV-SW559 or you will not find it. Alternatively you could just search for Panasonic, but must go through all of their cameras to find it. Just a time saving feature.

Entering 559 by itself will pull up that Panasonic model. The filtering does allow for searching for partial names or numbers.

What ways should defintely working ok, to trust calculator output numerals? If he choose camera on dropped-down list, always right be his numbers? Just may use down on guys outdoor plaza, if close enough to try.

Are there any thermal camera options in the calculator?

IPVM

Christina, We do have a number of thermal cameras in the calculator, e.g., the FLIR FC series. It knows their AoV and their resolution

The main limitation is that we don't display a thermal specific image preview.

Let us know what thermal cameras you want included.

Any thoughts to add, or anyone know of good resource for generic estimate of viewable vertical coverage based on camera height? Essentially, how much blind area will I have under the camera when it is mounted X high, tilted Y degrees down with Z focal length...

The Axis site designer has a good height estimation tool on their Site Designer. We plan to add height calculation to the Calculator later this year.
